The Brookfield LA Hydro Unit 5 suffered a pitched blade, suspected to be caused by a wedged tug boat line, causing the blade to deform the hub bushing. Mobilizing quickly, BHI provided skilled hydro turbine technicians who were able to build scaffolding and held confined space rescue certifications. Having people qualified to perform any task we faced allowed us to move quickly and maintain safety, completing the runner hub replacement 9 days ahead of schedule. We also implemented brass washers between the spot face and bolt head which prevented unnecessary wear and protected the faces, allowing a first time successful oil test and longer life on this critical matting surface.
