BHI Energy worked together with GE Hitachi Nuclear on a first-of-a-kind project to repair a reactor coolant boundary leak at Talen’s Susquehanna Steam Electric Station (SSES). The leak was located in proximity to the IN-Core Monitor Housing (ICMH) pipe-to-flange weld and the BHI/GEH team proposed a repair utilizing a Structural Weld Overlay. The approach was challenging due to the emergent nature of the repair, no prior experience or lessons learned on a project of its kind, severely restricted access to the repair location, high area dose rates and an active through-wall leak with pressurized reactor water in the ICMH. BHI utilized custom tooling and equipment and fabricated a full-scale mockup of the ICMH and surrounding interferences to complete the entire project within 12 days. Contact us to learn more.
